I really like both Taos and Santa Fe, but both are a bit too commercialized for my taste and flooded with tourists. Both are also very expensive places to live. Are there any smaller towns around this area of New Mexico that have similar qualities (both geographical and cultural) but are lesser known with smaller populations?

I’m going to Jemez / Taos / Santa Fe / Albuquerque in early October and I had hoped to enjoy the natural hot springs. The ones I found require a long hike to get to them. I have arthritis and cannot hike very far (less than a mile) I found one called Spence Hot Springs that doesn’t seem to be a very far hike. Does anybody have first hand knowledge of this spring? I was reading that it was clothing optional but that nudity was illegal. I also read that it had gotten trashy and was even a mention of feces. Please help!

I’ve thought about moving to the Santa Fe or Taos, NM area for years and I’m planning to spend two or three months there exploring the area because it’s been many years since my last visit. I’ve checked craigslist New Mexico and that’s promising for both job & housing leads, but I’m wondering if anybody has other suggestions?
