What’s the best small town in New Mexico?

taos new mexico
aronbesmart asked:

I really like both Taos and Santa Fe, but both are a bit too commercialized for my taste and flooded with tourists. Both are also very expensive places to live. Are there any smaller towns around this area of New Mexico that have similar qualities (both geographical and cultural) but are lesser known with smaller populations?

Madrid, pronounced maah-drid. is a very small town southeast of Santa Fe along the Turquoise Trail, I believe. We used to go there several times. It is populated by people that have been there for generations and also by artists. It is a very close-knit community. Several years ago, there was a woman who lived in an old abandoned mine shack with her newborn. She would never accept any help from the townspeople. Needless to say, whenever she came into town, they tried to help her and indeed would give her clothing for the new one. Occasionally, she would accept handouts. The winter came and the baby grew sicker. The people in the town grew concerned for the baby’s health. To make a long story short, the child died. The mother did not want to accept the death and would not let the child go. Sheriffs were called. The baby was given a funeral and was buried. The town paid for the funeral and the burial. The mother dug the baby up. The towns people were bereft because they felt that they should have intervened much sooner to save the child’s life. The baby was re-interred. The mother dug her up again, and the last thing I read, they took the mother away and committed her to a psychiatric facility, finally. Madrid is a town of very caring people. It is very old, very beautiful and as of 2003 when we move from New Mexico, untouched by tourists and affordable.

My favorite village is Cloudcroft, NM, near Ruidoso. I like Ruidoso and Silver City, too. Very picturesque.
