What is the drive like from Albuquerque to Santa Fe in January?

santa fe
Jennifer B asked:

We want to go to Santa Fe and are thinking about saving money by flying into Albuquerque. What is the drive like that time of year? Lots of snow on the road? How long does it take?

From the airport its under an hour and its interstate all the way. Snow that sticks on the ground only happens 2 or 3 times per winter and its NOT severe. You’ll be fine.

Assuming you are in New Mexico for the whole trip, thats about an hour drive (I used to live in Santa Fe years ago). How could flying possibly save you money?

She probably means by flying into Albuquerque versus Santa Fe. Should be no problem unless there is some freak blizzard. Even then, it only takes an hour and waiting it out in Albuquerque while they cleared the freeway wouldn’t be so bad.

Most likely the weather will be clear and sunny until you reach the top of La Bajada and then you’ll see snow on the ground, but the road will still be dry.
