Sierra Blanca White Mountain Wilderness area just outside Ruidoso, New Mexico. Cloud Croft and Red River areas.
I have never hiked at Sierra Blanca but trails are there. I have seen elk, wild mustangs and mule deer.

Lincoln National Forest has lots of winding roads and beautiful scenery though it’s been over 20 years since I’ve been there.

The Gila Wilderness in the Southwestern part of the state. Also Chama, Ruidoso, Red River, Jemez. Even the Sandia and Manzano Mountains 20-30 minutes East and Southeast of Albuquerque are beautiful. NM has over 16 million acres of acres of forested land, it’s not just a bleak desert as some people believe.
