Some residents and visitors in the small city of Taos, New Mexico, have for years been annoyed and puzzled by a mysterious and faint low-frequency hum in the desert air. Oddly, only about 2 percent of Taos residents report hearing the sound. Some believe it is caused by unusual acoustics; others suspect mass hysteria or some secret, sinister purpose. Whether described as a whir, hum, or buzz and whether psychological, natural, or supernatural no one has yet been able to locate the sound’s origin.

Strange coincidence.
Sausalito, California a few years back were subjected to a similar “unknown” sound emanating from the bay. US Navy and numerous research teams could never discover the source. Then, after a few months it stopped.
This “sound” had a decible range that seemed to effect residents. I’ll have to look up Taos and read about it.

I don’t actually live in New Mexico, but I’ve encountered similar phenomena in my old apartment. The tenant in the unit below mine decided to get an air conditioner that caused the most appalling hum in my apartment. I started to get migraine-like headaches, I became short-tempered and irritable, and I even started to feel nauseated. That was about the time that I decided to move before I had a psychotic episode and took a sledge hammer to the damned AC unit - or to the tenant. It was absolute hell!

As a lifelong resident of Taos, I am very familiar with the Taos Hum. Most people I know around here have never heard it, but from my house, I hear it almost every night!! The best way to describe it is like a really old pickup truck idling somewhere down the road. (I have absolutely searched for an old pickup truck down the road… there is none.)
