Some interesting places I can think of are Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Capulin National Monument, Carlsbad Caverns, and Roswell. The last two would require a detour to the south but it’s a pretty straight shot to Dallas from there. If you do want to head south, there’s also White Sands National Monument and the Trinity Site, which is only open on the first Saturday in April and October. That’s where the first atomic bomb was detonated. Unfortunately, the part of Texas that borders eastern New Mexico isn’t one of the more interesting areas to see. It’s mostly flat farmland. I’ve driven through it and had to fight off an intense urge to fall asleep while sitting at the wheel.

Palo Duro Canyon is just a little southeast of Amarillo, then there is Lubbock.

Palo Duro Canyon is it. There is nothing else remarkable in the entire span. There is a good museum in Canyon, Texas and you can stop and eat a free 72 oz. steak in Amarillo. Copper Breaks State park is just south of 287 at Quanah. You can detour north 15 miles at Wichita Falls to Oklahoma and gamble in the Kiowa Casino. Everything you want to do or see is likely to be around Taos or in the DFW metroplex. If you are from Taos you might find Cabelas off I35 south near Fort Worth interesting. If yu are from Taos go south through Santa Fe and through Lubbuck then on to Snyder to hit 180 east and follow it and you can go by and visit around Possum Kingdom Lake and stay and play golf at the Cliffs Resort. The entire Possum Kingdom Lake area is nice. A state park is there, boats can be rented near Sandy Beach. The Lake is 50 miles long so you will not have seen such at Taos. You can enven visit Hell’s Gate. If you are from Dallas go west of Taos towards Tres Piedras and look off in the Taos gorge. It is worth a peek.
